The highest degree of criminal background checks available in the UK is an Enhanced DBS check. It displays a candidate’s whole criminal history, including any cautions, suspensions, warnings, spent and unspent convictions, as well as any other pertinent data located in local police records.

People working with children or adults in certain situations, such as those who require medical or personal care, should undergo an enhanced DBS check. It is also suitable for a small number of other roles such as taxi license applications or people working in the Gambling Commission. People within the financial or banking sector may also be required to undergo an enhanced DBS check to make sure that they do not have a history of crimes such as theft or fraud.
The fee for an enhanced DBS check is £50 (excl. VAT) (with or without a barred list check). However, DBS checks for volunteers are free of cost (excluding the handling fee).
